As a Lions fan, watching 49ers-Chiefs Super Bowl too hard to stomach

It’s been more than a week since the Lions blew a 17-point lead in the NFC Championship game, handing the 49ers a trip to the Super Bowl.

I’m totally over it.

Or am I?

The 49ers-Chiefs Super Bowl is a few days away, and despite the fact that I love football and all the shenanigans that go with Super Bowl week, I just can’t muster any sort of will to care this year. I don’t want to care. I don’t want to watch. Don’t make me!

Yeah, I’m not over it, am I?

The Lions were so close, guys. So close. I know, they’ll have more chances in the coming years and should be well-positioned to compete for a title, but it’s the NFL, you just never know. And this one still stings.

To have to sit down and use up a valuable Sunday on a game that should have included the Lions in their first ever Super Bowl, but instead features a team that shouldn’t be there, and a team we’ve already beaten, it’s too much to stomach. It makes me queasy just thinking about it. Even with a seven-layer dip on the table.

Before this season, the Lions were not even remotely close to the Super Bowl. It felt like an entirely different world. Like an island in distant space that we didn’t have permission to visit. But now that we’ve got the coordinates, not being on the island is heartbreaking. I want to be on the island!

It’s like having to go to your ex-girlfriend’s wedding. You don’t want to be there. But what else are you going to do? Watch Rush Hour 2 again?

It’s the Super Bowl, you can’t just skip it, can you?

Can you?

I’m totally over it.
