DETROIT – You might have missed it, but the Tigers and Pistons made a combined three trades yesterday.
First, the Pistons traded a second-round pick to the Utah Jazz for a fellow named Simone Fontecchio, per reports. Fontecchio is a 28-year-old who was averaging 8.9 points per game and shooting 39.1% from beyond the three-point line this season.
A few hours later, the Pistons sent guard Monte Morris to the Minnesota Timberwolves for guard Shake Milton, forward Troy Brown, and a second-round pick in 2030, according to reports.
You might think these moves weren’t a big deal, but the Pistons were 6-43 before the trades, and they’re 1-0 since. Makes you think.
Finally, the Tigers decided they wanted to get in on the action and traded Nick Maton to the Baltimore Orioles. Maton was designated for assignment this week when the Tigers added reliever Kolton Ingram off waivers from the Angels.
Instead of losing Maton for nothing, the Tigers ended up trading him to Baltimore for cash.
The Nick Maton era was short, but we’ll never forget that walk-off home run he hit against the Giants. (Actually, some of you probably already have.)
Everyone expected the sports scene in Detroit to be less exciting after the Lions’ playoff run ended. Little did we know, things were just about to heat up.
