DETROIT – A former Detroit Lions player has earned a lead role in an upcoming movie.
Ameer Abdullah spent parts of four season in Detroit after the Lions selected him in the second round of the 2015 draft. He played in 35 games for the Lions, carrying the ball 327 times for 1,251 yards and six touchdowns. He also caught 57 passes for 420 yards and three scores.
After the Lions waived Abdullah in 2018, he spent parts of four years with the Vikings and then one partial season with the Panthers. He was with the Las Vegas Raiders each of the past two seasons.
But now, Abdullah is trying to break into a different world: television and film. According to a release, he has landed a lead role as “K-Money” in “Break the Cycle,” an urban drama written by former NBA player Jarnell Stokes.
Abdullah will work alongside Cuba Gooding, Jr., an Oscar-winning actor. Former NFL tight end Vernon Davis is among the others joining the cast.
Production will begin in March.
“This film is a heart-pounding journey through the world of streetball that explores themes of family, ambition, and the moral complexities of urban life,” Stokes said. “It tells the story of navigating a treacherous path, an unfortunate reality for far too many young boys in our urban communities. I’m so excited to have Ameer as part of this tremendously talented group of actors who will help bring this project to life.”
