Here’s a look back at how the boys basketball season ended on Saturday.
Division 1
Orchard Lake St. Mary’s 63, North Farmington 52 — This was the first time that two Oakland County schools had ever played each other in a Division 1/Class A state final. The title went to St. Mary’s, which was led by Trey McKenney, one of the country’s top juniors who had a brilliant game in front of Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo and many members of MSU’s team. McKenney had 32 points and 10 rebounds to lead St. Mary’s to its first ever title in Division 1/Class A and its fifth overall. St. Mary’s last won a state title in 2000 when it captured the Class B crown.
Division 2
Warren Lincoln 53, Grand Rapids Christian 39 — Not only did St. Mary’s win its first ever title in Division 1/Class A, but Lincoln topped that by winning its first ever boys basketball state championship in school history. The Abes were led by brothers Markus and Moses Blackwell. Markus Blackwell scored 24 points, while Moses Blackwell had 12 points.
Division 3
Niles Brandywine 56, Detroit Old Redford 48 — Old Redford was seeking its first ever state championship, but fell short against Brandywine, located on the southwest corner of the state near the Michigan-Indiana border. Old Redford led 24-23 at halftime, but went cold in the third quarter, being outscored 20-5 and falling behind 43-29 going into the fourth quarter. Jaremiah Palmer scored 18 points for Brandywine, while Jaylin Muldrow had 14 points for Old Redford. It was the first ever title for Brandywine.
Division 4
Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian 79, Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart 59 — A perennial power in Division 4, Tri-Unity Christian won its second state title in three years and sixth overall. The Defenders shot 60.9% from the field and took charge of the game in the second quarter when it outscored Sacred Heart 22-11 to take a 39-25 lead at halftime.
