Detroit Edison Public School Academy hosts watch party for WNBA draft prospect Rickea Jackson

Jackson was named 2019 Michigan Miss Basketball as she made her mark during her high school career

DETROIT – Detroit Edison Public School Academy (DEPSA) is throwing a watch party for former student Rickea Jackson, who is expected to be a top-five pick in the 2024 WNBA draft.

Festivities for the former Metro Detro prep standout who achieved on and off the court will occur Monday (April 15) at DEPSA.

The draft, presented by State Farm, will be held at 7:30 p.m. inside the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in New York City.

The Royal Oak native was named 2019 Michigan Miss Basketball as she made her mark during her high school career.

The standout athlete with an impressive basketball journey took her talents to Mississippi State University.

She later completed her college career at the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers, where she shattered scoring records, which all but certainly could make her a top-five pick.

At the moment, mock drafts place her falling to the Los Angeles Sparks at No. 4. The 6′2″ small forward is a proven scorer who should be able to bring the spark Los Angeles needs.

During her senior season, Jackson averaged 20.2 points per game, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists while shooting 48.5% from the field.

“Rickea’s determination and work ethic have been unmatched,” said Jackson’s prep coach, Monique Brown. “She’s not only an incredible athlete but also a role model for our current students. We’re immensely proud of her accomplishments.”

The Metro Detroit draft party will also be celebrated at DEPSA, which has invited fans, friends, and supporters to join the festivities inside the gymnasium starting at 6:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public to witness history as Jackson, who set a career-high in three-pointers made during her senior season with 22 takes her next steps in her basketball journey.

  • 2023 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup (silver), 2019 FIBA 3x3 U18 Women’s World Cup (gold).
  • 2023 USA Women’s AmeriCup Team, 2019 USA 3x3 Women’s U18 National Team.
  • 2023 FIBA AmeriCup All-Star Five.
  • Named to the 2023 USA Women’s AmeriCup Team on June 22, 2023 in a silver-medal-winning effort, averaged team-high 14.6 points (4th among all players), 4.9 rebounds and 24.3 minutes in seven games and named to All-Star Five.
  • Member of the 2019 USA Basketball Women’s 3x3 U18 World Cup Team that claimed the gold medal for the USA with a 7-0 record in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia; scored 39 points, which ranked fifth among all competitors in the 20-team field.Competed in the 2019 USA Basketball 3x3 U18 National Championship with It’sJustWork.
  • Named as one of 18 finalists for the 2018 USA Basketball Women’s U17 World Cup Team on May 28, 2018.
  • 2017 USA Women’s U16 National Team Trials participant.
