Analyst says he would take Jared Goff over these 6 ‘elite’ QBs, but not 3 others

Colin Cowherd chooses Goff over Burrow, Hurts, but not Stafford

DETROIT – An analyst chose between Jared Goff and other “elite” quarterbacks during a segment, and he only picked against the Detroit Lions QB in three of the nine instances.

The segment was part of Colin Cowherd’s Tuesday edition of “The Herd.”

“In today’s segment, ‘Take Goff or Take Off,’ I will chose Jared Goff or this other elite quarterback if I had to pick one to lead my franchise this point forward,” Cowherd said.

They didn’t include Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen, implying that those two are well above the rest of the options. I think we can all agree Goff isn’t even in their class.

But Cowherd shocked cohost Jason McIntyre by choosing Goff over Jalen Hurts, Dak Prescott, Jordan Love, Joe Burrow, Brock Purdy, and Kirk Cousins.

The only quarterbacks Cowherd chose over Goff were Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert, and Matthew Stafford.

The Lions made Goff the second-highest-paid quarterback in the NFL in terms of annual salary with a four-year, $212 million extension on Monday. But I don’t think most fans would take him over some of those names.

Cowherd said he took Goff over Burrow because of durability, and he justified the Hurts pick by pointing to last year’s struggles with a new play-caller in Philadelphia.

He also took Goff over Purdy, who helped lead the San Francisco 49ers to a win over the Lions in the NFC Championship Game.

The Stafford pick is sure to ruffle some feathers in Detroit after the Lions eliminated the Rams in the first round of the playoffs. But remember: Stafford was incredible in that game.

Goff is probably closer to the 10th-best quarterback in the NFL than he is to the top five, but either way, the fact that he’s being talked about alongside these names supports the Lions’ franchise-record investment.
