DETROIT – Fans watching the Detroit Tigers host the Pirates on Wednesday at Comerica Park were asked to move to the concourse due to weather.
“Due to lightning in the area, we ask all fans to exit the seating area,” a message on the stadium scoreboard read in the top of the second inning. “Please take cover on the concourse. Thank you!”
Rumbles of thunder could be heard as Tarik Skubal pitched in the first inning. Bally Sports Detroit play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti said there was at least one lightning strike.
The first game of this Pirates-Tigers series was rained out Tuesday, so a doubleheader was scheduled for Wednesday. The two teams don’t meet again this season, so they obviously need to play both games.
Probably for that reason, the teams stayed on the field as a few spurts of heavy rainfall and the occasional rumble of thunder moved through Downtown Detroit. The fans, however, were asked to take cover.
The Tigers were happy to play through the stormy weather, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead against rookie starter Jared Jones.
Fans started making their way back to their seats in the bottom of the second inning.
