DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers announced five new roster moves in what was a major buzzkill for their recent winning streak.

After falling 8.5 games out of a playoff spot late in the second half, the Tigers rattled off eight wins in their final 10 games before the break to trim that number down to seven.

With victories in their first two games back in action, the Tigers entered Sunday trailing the Red Sox and Royals by just five games for the final wild card spot.

But a series of Sunday morning roster moves put a major damper on this mini run.

Most notably, the Tigers put star starting pitcher Reese Olson on the 15-day injured list with a strain in his pitching shoulder.

Easton Lucas, who has a 4.38 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in Toledo, was called up to take Olson’s spot.

The Tigers also sent Ryan Vilade back to Triple-A, even though he was batting .296 with a .752 OPS across his nine MLB games so far this season.

Bligh Madris, a utility infielder and outfielder, was called up to take Vilade’s spot. Since he wasn’t on the 40-man roster, the Tigers moved Kerry Carpenter to the 60-day injured list to make room.

In 80 games with the Mud Hens this season, Madris is hitting .236 with an .803 OPS, 14 homers, 16 doubles, and 17 steals.

Tigers roster moves

  • Reese Olson placed on 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain.
  • Kerry Carpenter moved to 60-day injured list.
  • Ryan Vilade optioned to Triple-A Toledo.
  • Bligh Madris selected from Triple-A Toledo.
  • Easton Lucas recalled from Triple-A Toledo.
