DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers traded starting pitcher Jack Flaherty to the Los Angeles Dodgers for two prospects.
The deal was reported just five minutes before the 6 p.m. trade deadline on Tuesday. Flaherty, who is set to be a free agent at the end of the season, was the best starting pitcher on the market.
Flaherty posted a 2.95 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in Detroit, with 133 strikeouts in 106.2 innings.
Detroit received catcher Thayron Liranzo and shortstop Trey Sweeney in the deal.
Liranzo, 21, was the No. 8 prospect in the Dodgers’ organization on MLB Pipeline, and No. 3 on Baseball America.
He has a .700 OPS, 15 doubles, seven homers, and 82 strikeouts in 74 games at High-A this season. Baseball America likes his power and arm strength, but he’s not thought to have a great hit tool.
Sweeney is 24 years old and has spent this season at Triple-A. He’s hitting .255 with a .761 OPS, 13 homers, and 22 doubles.
Like Liranzo, Sweeney has had strikeout issues -- 118 of them in just 96 games at Triple-A.
Overall, it’s an underwhelming return for the best pitcher on the trade market. The Blue Jays got more for a worse pitcher in Yusei Kikuchi, and the Marlins got much more for Trevor Rogers, who isn’t a rental but hasn’t been good since 2021.
