Little Caesars Arena in Detroit to host Big Ten women’s basketball tournament

Conference tournament coming to Downtown Detroit in 2028

$1.5B proposal for District Detroit around Little Caesars Arena could be decided Tuesday

DETROIT – Little Caesars Arena in Detroit will host the Big Ten women’s basketball tournament in 2028.

Little Caesars Arena is home to our Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons. They have also hosted numerous concerts and a handful of NCAA events. Now they will add another high-profile event to that list.

On Wednesday the Big Ten announced the host sites for future men and women’s basketball tournaments with Detroit hosting the 2028 women’s tournament. The tournament will be held March 1-5, 2028, at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

“We look forward to partnering with the city of Detroit as they host the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament,” said Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti. “Detroit will be an exciting post-season opportunity for our student-athletes, coaches, and fans, both locally and from across the country.”

Last year, Little Caesars Arena was home to the 2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional. In 2018, the venue hosted the NCAA Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds. This marks the first time the Big Ten women’s tournament will be in Detroit.

“The Detroit Sports Commission is extremely proud to be selected by the Big Ten Conference to host the 2028 Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament,” said Dave Beachnau, Detroit Sports Commission Executive Director. “Landing this impressive event is the result of our efforts to prioritize women’s sports and to position Detroit as a premier destination for major sporting events...”

Although this marks the first time the tournament will be in Detroit, this is the second Big Ten women’s tournament to be held in Michigan. The first was in Grand Rapids at Van Andel Arena in 2001.

This 2024 season will be the first year of the Big Ten’s four team expansion. Oregon, UCLA, USC, and Washington are scheduled to officially join the conference on Friday.

“The lineup will bring the conference’s premier basketball events to fans in all three time zones across the new Big Ten landscape over the next four seasons,” the Big Ten said in a statement.
