Former Michigan football star and Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy needs knee surgery just before his first NFL season, per reports.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter said McCarthy experienced knee soreness over the weekend, so the team scheduled an MRI for Monday night.
The results of that test were apparently bad enough that McCarthy needs surgery, Schefter says.
It’s unclear how long McCarthy will be out.
McCarthy played in his first NFL preseason game on Saturday, completing 11 of 17 pass attempts for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. He also ran for 18 yards on two carries.
He was drafted at No. 10 overall this offseason after leading Michigan to a 15-0 record and national championship as a junior.
In two years as a college starter, McCarthy won 27 of 28 games while throwing for 5,710 yards, 44 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
Love you Viking nation. I’ll be back in no time. Amor fati
