Detroit Lions troll Cowboys by trying familiar play in blowout win

Lions try to throw touchdown pass to Taylor Decker

Detroit, which would go on to reach the NFC championship game, seemed to have taken the lead with 23 seconds to go on a 2-point conversion pass from Jared Goff to offensive lineman Taylor Decker. But the officials waved it off, saying Decker hadn't properly reported as an eligible receiver — something the Lions disputed. The Cowboys won 20-19. DETROIT – The Detroit Lions couldn’t resist trolling the Cowboys with a very familiar play call in a blowout win.

Everyone remembers how last year’s Lions-Cowboys game ended. Detroit appeared to win the game on a two-point conversion pass to Taylor Decker in the end zone.

But while the Lions celebrated, the officials dropped a late flag and said Decker hadn’t reported as eligible. The Lions ultimately lost the game by a point.

That controversial ending loomed over this year’s matchup, and it was clearly motivation for the Lions. They delivered haymaker after haymaker, jumping out to an early 17-3 lead and refusing to let off the gas.

Midway through the third quarter, leading 34-9, the Lions decided to try to rub a little salt in the wound.

On a first-and-goal from the 2-yard line, Jared Goff dropped back and threw a pass in the end zone to, of course, Decker.

The play was well defended by the Cowboys, but Decker still managed to get his hands on the pass. It was batted away at the last second, though, and fell incomplete.

Ben Johnson went back to the well on the following drive with a sneaky little hook-and-ladder to left tackle Penei Sewell. Sewell dove for the goal line after a 10-yard gain, but the play was called back.

For an ineligible man downfield. But this time, it was on Frank Ragnow.

Both drives ended in field goals, but it didn’t matter. The Lions shoved the Cowboys in a locker and threw away the key.

Let’s be honest: It would have felt even sweeter with a Decker touchdown.
