DETROIT – Now that he officially qualifies, a current Detroit Lions player has cemented himself as one of the best at his position in NFL history.
I‘m not sure if you’ve noticed, but punters don’t get a whole lot of love from fans -- probably because nobody is happy that their team has to punt in the first place.
But punters are very important. It’s Michigan-Michigan State week, so everyone should be very aware. The ability to flip the field or pin an opponent deep is a real advantage.
Turns out, the Lions have one of the greatest punting weapons in NFL history.
Jack Fox punted for the 250th time in his career during Sunday’s win over the Minnesota Vikings, and that means he qualifies for all-time rankings.
Fox now has the second-highest gross average and the fourth-highest net average in NFL punting history.
All 251 of Fox‘s career punts have come in a Lions uniform after he was plucked from the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad back in 2019.
He debuted in 2020 and has handled punting duties in every single game since, averaging 48.5 yards and 42.3 net yards per punt.
Fox unleashed a 63-yarder as part of a four-punt effort in Minneapolis. He averaged 54.8 yards, pushing his season average north of 50.
Fox is in the second season of a four-year, $14 million contract, and even though head coach Dan Campbell likes to take risks and push the envelope on fourth down, Fox has been worth every penny.
In yesterday's game, @Lions P @MrJackFox reached 250-career punts, which qualifies him for all-time @NFL rankings.
