DETROIT – On top of all the defensive injuries, the Detroit Lions just got some devastating news about running back David Montgomery.
Moments after announcing the injuries to defensive tackle Alim McNeill and cornerback Carlton Davis, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Montgomery is “out indefinitely” with an MCL injury.
“Montgomery is undergoing additional testing on his knee and getting a second opinion to confirm, but he could be lost for the season,” Schefter posted on X.
For a Lions team that’s already down nearly its entire starting defense -- Aidan Hutchinson, McNeill, Marcus Davenport, Alex Anzalone, Derrick Barnes, Malcolm Rodriguez, and Davis -- this is just the latest gut punch.
The Lions were Super Bowl favorites before Sunday’s loss to the Bills, but now, it feels like their hopes are fading because of all the injuries.
Aaron Glenn is already plucking players off the streets and plugging them into his lineup to even field a defense. Now the loss of Montgomery will put even more pressure on that side of the ball.
The Lions' specialty is establishing the run and capitalizing on play action passes. Without Montgomery, the hammer for that running game is gone.
It’ll be much more difficult for the Lions to control the clock without their work horse, and the offense as a whole will suffer.
There’s no way to sugarcoat it: The losses of McNeill, Davis, and Montgomery are much worse than the actual loss to the Bills.
