DETROIT – The University of Detroit Mercy announced Friday men's basketball head coach Ray McCallum has been releived of his duties.Â
McCallum just finished his eighth year with the program. The team ended this season at 16-15, 9-9 in the Horizon League for sixth place. In his eight years, McCallum totaled a 130-132 record including 66-72 in league play and made two postseason appearances.

"After a careful and long review of the entire men's basketball program, I determined it was necessary to have a change in leadership," said Director of Athletics Robert Vowels Jr. "I would like to thank coach McCallum for his eight years of service at the University and for all of his efforts."
McCallum's Titan team won the Horizon League Championship in 2012 and earned a berth to the NIT in 2013. His son, Ray McCallum Jr., played three seasons under him before announcing he would forego his senior season and enter the NBA draft. He was drafted 36th overall by the Sacramento Kings in 2013. He now plays with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Vowels also announced Friday assistant coaches Steve Payne and Jay Smith will not be retained. A national search for the next head men's basketball coach will begin immediately, the school said.Â
