Detroit Pistons open preseason: 5 way-too-early observations

The Detroit Pistons played basketball on Monday.

The Pistons opened preseason on Monday night at Little Caesars Arena against the Orlando Magic. They lost big -- but it doesn't matter.

The team has a slew of new faces, mostly coming off the bench, which makes it a bit more interesting to watch.

Here are some way-too-early observations:

Christian Wood deserves a roster spot

Wood, a free agent pickup from the Pelicans, led the Pistons in points with 19, adding eight rebounds and a block in 19 minutes.

Wood, 24, is a young, athletic power forward. It would be a shame to lose him, considering the lack of depth in the front court.

Starters show rust

Point guard Reggie Jackson shot 2-12 from the field and 1-5 from the three-point line. Woof. Andre Drummond had a good debut with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Blake Griffin only played 14 minutes and looked more like he was just observing the team from a distance. He had a sleeve on his left leg. He had three points.

Tony Snell is a good fit

Snell started the game in the three spot and showed how badly the Pistons needed a swing shooter last year. He'll be a good fit with the offense moving forward.

Derrick Rose, Joe Johnson in a Pistons jersey

It's just weird, right? That's all. It's just odd.

Bruce Brown the combo guard

We saw this in Summer League, but it's the clear the Pistons would love Bruce Brown to be more of a point guard than a scorer on the floor. He seems like he's down for the challenge.

Pistons will hit the floor again on Wednesday at LCA against Dallas. We'll keep drawing very early conclusions.
