DETROIT – Former University of Michigan quarterback Chad Henne is in a heated battle for the starting quarterback role in Jacksonville.

The Jaguars are giving both Henne and last year's starter Blake Bortles even snaps in practice and preseason.

Head coach Doug Marone told WJXT that he's actively deciding who will start for the team:

“I’m really looking to see the game,” Doug explained. “I think no one really hurt themselves as far as the practice goes, which I pretty much expected. Now it’s a matter of what happens in this game and afterwards. Like I said before, a lot of times I don’t like to make quick decisions.”

“I kind of look at it the other way. I try to look at it to see which guy is going to go out there and take it. I’m just trying to figure out who is going to be that guy in that position that can lead our team. Who best gives us an opportunity to win?”

Henne, now 32, played all four years as the starting quarterback at Michigan from 2004 to 2008. Henne owns Michigan school records in completions, passing yards, touchdowns and interceptions.

After being drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 2008, Henne started for the team in 2009 and 2010, before leaving for Jacksonville in 2012.

Bortles, who was drafted to be a franchise quarterback for Jacksonville, is coming off a shaky 2016 season, throwing 16 interceptions and leading the Jaguars to only three wins.
