Lalonde, Boughner ‘relieved’ of coaching duties ‘immediately’

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings fired head coach Derek Lalonde and named his replacement on Thursday.

Lalonde and associated coach Bob Boughner have been “relieved of their coaching duties effective immediately,” according to a press release.

Executive Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman announced that the team has named Todd McLellan the 29th head coach in franchise history and signed him to a multi-year contract.

McLellan worked as assistant coach with the Red Wings from 2005 to 2008. He has 16 seasons of NHL head coaching experience.

The Red Wings have hired Trent Yawney as an assistant coach. Yawney played in 12 NHL seasons as a defenseman before he began his coaching career.

The Detroit Red Wings released the following statement on social media:

“Detroit Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman today announced that the team has named Todd McLellan the 29th Head Coach in franchise history and signed him to a multi-year contract. Additionally, the Red Wings have hired Trent Yawney as an Assistant Coach.

“Head Coach Derek Lalonde and Associate Coach Bob Boughner have been relieved of their coaching duties, effective immediately.”
