DETROIT – The Radio Television Digital News Association announced Tuesday the regional winners of the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award.
WDIV-Local 4 won for its “Continuing Coverage” of the David Stojcevski story, the man who died in a Macomb County jail after being arrested for a traffic ticket. He suffered from serious drug withdrawal, losing more than 50 pounds in just 16 days, before dying on the floor of his cell. Local 4 Defender Kevin Dietz broke the story and the FBI is now reviewing the case.
Executive Producer Ro Coppola, Special Projects Producer Mike Arcilesi, and Special Projects Editors Vanessa Ogletree and Ben Bell helped Dietz on this series, poring over more than 240 hours of video.
In addition to the Edward R. Murrow Award, Local 4’s investigative unit, The Defenders, also received the Wade H. McCree “Advancement of Justice” Award for bringing to light the Floyd Dent story, the Inkster man beaten by police after a traffic stop. As a result, one officer was sent to prison, two were suspended and the police chief resigned.
“Both investigations are examples of solid journalism; Digging deep to uncover the truth,” said News Director Kim Voet.
“We are honored that our news team continues to make a difference, and effect positive change in our community,” said Marla Drutz, vice-president and general manager.
The RTDNA has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Murrow's pursuit of excellence in journalism embodies the spirit of the awards that carry his name.
