Pieces of ice collect and dam off the river, causing it to back up. What was uncommon was the typical help used to prevent the St. Clair River from spilling over wasn’t available, causing damage all along the river. Two ice breaking ships -- U.S. Coast Guard’s Bristol Bay and Canadian cutter The Griffon -- have been conducting operations to ease the flooding.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, two icebreaking ships -- the U.S. Coast Guard Bristol Bay and the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Griffon -- have been conducting icebreaking operations to ease the flooding. “Griffon was underway until 8:30 p.m. flushing ice that is contributing to the flooding, and both cutters will resume icebreaking operations at 6 a.m. Wednesday. Bristol Bay, normally homeported in Detroit, is staged in Algonac, Mich. for the overnight hours,” read a statement from the U.S. Coast Guard.

A COVID-19 case has been confirmed at the Club Capri in Algonac, St. Clair County Health Department announced Wednesday. Department officials said the confirmed case is from an employee. Anyone who visited the restaurant on July 18 and 19 may have been exposed and encouraged to monitor for symptoms for 14 days. The restaurant will remain open and management is working with department officials. As of Wednesday, 80,172 confirmed cases were reported in Michigan, with 6,172 deaths and 57,502 recoveries.

The day ahead will feature partial cloud cover early this morning, followed by mostly sunny skies for the balance of the day. It'll be a windy day, though, with west winds at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts over 30 mph possible. These winds have prompted a Lakeshore Flood Warning for the Harsens Island / Algonac area. Highs today will reach the mid to upper 70s, but even cooler air is headed this way for the weekend.
