Maybe you drive the Davison Freeway every day. The Davison Freeway, which runs east-west between M-10 and Interstate 75, was the first urban freeway constructed in America. In 1914, the area was incorporated into a 2.9 square mile city called Highland Park, which exists within the boundaries of the City of Detroit. Because of heavy traffic, the Highland Park Council approved a proposal to replace the road with a six-lane freeway and construction began in 1941. There are several types of plants that can cause trouble in Michigan.

LANSING, Mich. – This year’s sturgeon season was cut short when it ended about six hours after it started on Saturday. The season began 8 a.m. Saturday and ended at 1:40 p.m the same day. The fishing season was scheduled to run Feb. 1 until Feb. 5, or until the harvest quota had been reached. The Department of Natural Resources set a harvest quota of six to prevent over fishing, but seven fish were caught. The three females ranged from 47 to 75 inches long, and 19 to 100 pounds in weight.

The Michigan DNR confirmed a report of a cougar in Northern Michigan. A mountain lion image caught on a landowner’s trail camera in Gogebic County has been confirmed as the state’s 39th cougar report since 2008. Every day, you likely use all kinds of plastic - everything from water bottles to containers, and you may be recycling them, but are you doing it right? Currently, in Michigan, we recycle 15% of plastic, and their goal is to raise it to 30% by 2020. "In fact, 15% is really low for the Great Lakes region," said Greenberg. Karl Hattopp also joined us from Clean Tech Recycling to show us what happens when we recycle correctly. Hattopp says that Clean Tech Recycling takes the recycled bottles such as laundry detergent bottles and water bottles and they turn them into pellets that are eventually turned back into bottles.

Yet, Detroit’s big-ticket music festival, Mo Pop, feels different. But all it takes is a quick left to find pivotal pieces of the Mo Pop experience. During her trip back home, the pop-star noticed a Mo Pop billboard with her picture plastered on the front. Due to West Riverfront Park’s new $55 million makeover, Mo Pop is abruptly being rerouted, with whispers suggesting the new location will be Belle Isle. It survived the 2015 “Lake Mo Pop” storm during Iron & Wine, so anything else will be a piece of cake.

DETROIT – Vice President Mike Pence will be in Detroit next week. Pence is scheduled to speak at the Detroit Economic Club on Wednesday, Aug. 7 at 12 p.m. He is not scheduled to hold a press conference or take questions from the audience. Tickets are available to current Club members and their guests only. Pence was last in Michigan in April, making stops in Detroit and Taylor to talk about the auto industry.

You know recycling has many benefits, including saving energy and conserving resources. However, Michigan ranks as one of the states with the fewest people who actually recycle, and not all who do recycle do it properly. Greenberg introduced the EGLE's new campaign effort with the "Recycling Raccoon Squad", who are encouraging people to know it before you throw it. The "squad" helps people by giving them the general rules of thumb when it comes to properly recycling so a reusable product can be made from it. For instance, many people do not know that plastic bags cannot be recycled.

Sugar maples have dark gray bark with furrowed ridges, not as easily identifiable compared to other Michigan tree species. DETROIT – On Jan. 6, 1994, one of the best ice skaters in the world was attacked and injured at a Detroit ice rink. Nancy Kerrigan had just finished a practice session at Cobo Hall before the Olympic trials in Detroit. Figure Skating Team was Tonya Harding. Eckardt set up a meeting with Derrick Smith and Shane Stant, who agreed to injure Kerrigan for a fee. After hitting Kerrigan, Stant fled the ice rink in Smith’s getaway car.

A new report ranks the safest Michigan cities to live in right now. Safewise released their annual report this week, ranking the 20 safest cities in Michigan, according to violent crime and property crime. Along with Michigan’s second-safest city, Raisin Township, Thetford reported no incidents of violent crime in 2016, based on the most recent FBI crime report." Before Election Day, the state Senate majority held by Republicans numbered 27-10 with one vacancy. Though final results are still unavailable in some districts, projections show Democrats will gain six seats, narrowing the Republican majority to 22-16. The GOP majority in the state House before Nov. 6 was 63-46 with one vacancy. Democrats gained six seats in the election, however, and the Republican House majority will be reduced to 58-52. A former Obama administration official will face a Michigan co-chairman for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in the race for the suburban Detroit congressional seat held by retiring Republican Rep. Dave Trott. Haley Stevens won the Democratic nomination, edging out four other Democrats in Tuesday’s District 11 race. She was a Treasury official who worked on the auto bailout under Obama. Detroit-area business executive Lena Epstein won the Republican nomination. Although it has traditionally leaned Republican, Trump barely won the district in 2016.

DETROIT Forty five years ago this week, Jimmy Hoffa disappeared from a Bloomfield Hills restaurant. Since that day, hundreds of thousands of man hours and millions of dollars have gone into sorting through countless tips while trying to crack the case of Hoffas disappearance. Tony Giacalone: The FBI's HOFFEX Memo called Giacalone a "Detroit La Cosa Nostra lieutenant and street boss." The Feds have been more cautious, only approving searches when information came from people who could have had reason to know Hoffas fate. However, the FBI says all tips are still professionally vetted and the case will remain open until it is solved.

Parrot feather (Myriophyllum aquaticum), an invasive aquatic plant, has been found in three private ponds in Michigan since 2013. Parrot feather prefers slow-moving, freshwater habitats including ponds, lakes and tributaries. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has developed a new video to help people identify and report parrot feather. If you have parrot feather in an aquarium, remove the plants, seal them in a plastic bag and dispose of them – do not compost, as parrot feather can survive in compost.
