Residential Staff members demanded more protections including regular access to testing for all residence staff, and enforcement of the university mask and social distancing mandates in dining and residence halls. We’d like to thank everyone that supported us during our strike, especially GEO, AFT, our regents, our LT, & everyone on campus that supported us. GEO members had been on strike since Tuesday, Sept. 8 calling on university leadership to ensure better protections from COVID-19 on campus. That strike ended on Thursday, Sept. 17 after a vote from GEO members the previous evening.

The university and GEO union announced the strike end Thursday morning. “GEO said its members would return to their duties beginning this morning,” reads a statement from the university. At our largest general membership meeting to date, 1,074 GEO members voted to accept the university’s offer, 239 members voted to reject, and 66 abstained. GEO members and supporters now return to our regular work duties.

Addressing the U-M’s claim that some demands are not bargaining items, GEO member Sasha Bishop went over each of GEO’s anti-policing demands. Bishop elaborated on why the student unions' demands address the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

More than 250 undergraduates and members of Students Demand Representation, a U-M student activist organization, listened to speeches given from the steps of the Michigan Union about labor unions and the safety of university workers. After the speeches, undergraduate students marched through downtown Ann Arbor and across campus to join those on strike and to support U-M Dining employees who staged a walkout last week. On Monday afternoon, University of Michigan president Mark Schlissel said through video that the university has taken legal action against the strike. A proposal by the university to end the strike was supported by GEO leadership, but members ultimately rejected the university’s offer saying that it did not meet their demands. “Membership decided by an overwhelming majority that the university’s offer did not constitute continued progress on these demands,” the release states. GEO members have been on strike since Tuesday, Sept. 8, protesting the university’s return to in-person learning. On Thursday, the university released a more detailed response to GEO’s demands after its offer was rejected.

[Its] other neighbors meeting other neighbors through finding the glass.As he has explored the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti area, he has spontaneously left small pieces of artwork around. After posting about the pieces in an Ann Arbor Facebook group, more and more people have become interested in participating. Bungo started the Saturday scavenger hunts as a creative way to connect to the community and to get to know people.

Students, faculty and staff at the Ann Arbor campus can receive tests as part of the voluntary, free and opt-in surveillance U-M COVID-19 Community Sampling and Tracking Program. Martin is guiding development for the Community Sampling and Tracking Program. U-M community members with COVID-19 symptoms or individuals in close contact with someone with a positive COVID-19 test will not be tested. Students, staff and faculty who have previously been diagnosed with COVID-19 should not enroll in the U-M COVID-19 Community Sampling and Tracking Program.

Starting Friday, you wont be able to lazily float along Argo Cascades in your tube, according to Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation. The department made an announcement Wednesday afternoon that tubing will no longer be permitted in the Argo Cascades section of the Huron River, which wraps around the northeast part of downtown Ann Arbor. The decision was made to support ordinances and orders made by the City of Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County Health Department. The City of Ann Arbor ordinance, effective as of Monday, Aug. 24, limited outdoor social gatherings to 25 people and indoor gatherings to 10. But individuals with their own tubes continue to use the Argo Cascades creating crowds that are not consistent with the current orders.Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation staff will work with Ann Arbor Police Department to enforce the new ordinance.

A man and woman were killed in a single-vehicle crash Friday night on East Pleasant Road near Parker Road in Washtenaw County. Michigan State Police identified the victims as Michael Winokur, 40, of Ann Arbor, and Iris Floyd, 90, also of Ann Arbor. Troopers responded to the crash about 6:21 p.m.State police are investigating the cause of the crash, but a preliminary investigation suggested that speed may have been a factor. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor. This is an ongoing investigation.

In June, the company will reexamine if it will need to require employees to take an additional unpaid week off. Similar to other local news outlets across the country, MLive Media Group said it has suffered a steep decline in revenue during the pandemic. Formed in 2012, MLive Media Group owns MLive.com and operates newspapers in Ann Arbor, Bay City, Flint, Grand Rapids, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Muskegon and Saginaw. In response to the temporary measures, MLive launched a subscription program last week for its online readers to support its reporting.
