SpaceX aims for night crew launch, Elon Musk sidelined by virus
Read full article: SpaceX aims for night crew launch, Elon Musk sidelined by virusWith COVID-19 still surging, NASA continued the safety precautions put in place for SpaceX’s crew launch in May. Even the two astronauts on the first SpaceX crew flight stayed behind at Johnson Space Center in Houston. “I didn’t start breathing until about a minute after it took off,” Pence said during a stop at SpaceX Launch Control to congratulate the workers. Similar pleas for SpaceX’s first crew launch on May 30 went unheeded. The first-stage booster is expected to be recycled by SpaceX for the next crew launch.
SpaceX crew flight delayed; Elon Musk gets mixed COVID-19 results
Read full article: SpaceX crew flight delayed; Elon Musk gets mixed COVID-19 resultsFriday’s postponement news came after SpaceX chief Elon Musk disclosed he had gotten mixed test results for COVID-19 and was awaiting the outcome of a more definitive test. “I can assure everyone that we’re looking good for the (crew) launch and all of the critical personnel involved,” said SpaceX’s Benji Reed, senior director for human spaceflight. “So ‘Elon Musk Tests Negative for Covid’ is an equally correct title,” he tweeted. The upcoming crew flight comes just three months after the end of the test flight with Hurley and Bob Behnken, both NASA astronauts. NASA and SpaceX are especially eager to retrieve this first-stage booster; it will be used for the next crew launch.
Weather forecasting for a rocket launch: Its much more difficult than you might think
Read full article: Weather forecasting for a rocket launch: Its much more difficult than you might thinkThe weather criteria that must be satisfied for a go to launch is insane, and is constantly updated. Here is the current list of criteria:WindDo not launch if the sustained wind at the 162-foot level of the launch pad exceeds 30 mph. Downrange weatherDo not launch if downrange weather indicates a violation of limits at splashdown in case of Dragon launch escape. Do not launch if downrange weather shows a high probability of violating limits at splashdown in case of Dragon launch escape. Notice that the forecast is for much more than at and near the launch pad itself.

NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken are set to ride SpaceXs Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule to the International Space Station on a test flight. It will be the nations first astronaut launch to orbit in nearly a decade. NASA hired SpaceX and Boeing in 2014 to transport astronauts to the space station in a new kind of public-private partnership. Development of SpaceXs Dragon and Boeings Starliner capsules took longer than expected, however.
