A 24-year-old pediatric cancer survivor became a nurse to help kids with cancer in Metro Detroit. She was so inspired by her nurses at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak that she decided to follow in their footsteps.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and the disease doesn’t get nearly enough attention.

For veterans who couldn’t attend Veterans Day events and were limited to a hospital bed, Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak made sure they knew they hadn’t been forgotten.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – A barricaded gunman situation in Royal Oak ended Saturday night when the suspected gunman was shot by police and rushed to a hospital. Police added he was heavily armed, wearing body armor and barricaded himself inside the Royal Oak residence. Authorities said communication was reestablished with the suspected gunman after the drone was disabled. Police said deputies and the Royal Oak Fire Department administered aid to the man and he was rushed to the Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Imagine heart surgery without anesthesia, breathing tubes and weeks of recovery time. A new noninvasive surgery is being offered at Beaumont Hospital that has the patient awake for the procedure. Mary Olk didn’t have any symptoms when the doctors discovered a new issue with her heart. “It wasn’t scary at all.”Olk is one of only a few dozen Beaumont patients who had heart surgery while she was awake. A group of Beaumont Health Care Heroes received the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday afternoon.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Commissioner Kim Gibbs died Thursday after suffering a seizure following a car crash. On Aug. 5, her mother went to her home after family members reported she wasn’t responding to text messages or phone calls. Gibbs was found unconscious and was rushed Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak, where never regained consciousness. Whether the seizure Gibbs suffered was due to the accident or other health concerns is presently unknown. More information can be found on the official Royal Oak website here.
