Michigan residents between the ages of 30-49 years old continue to record the highest new virus cases per million residents. Specifically, daily new COVID cases have been the highest among those 30-39 years old on average in recent weeks. However, in the last four weeks, COVID cases per million have decreased for all age groups in the state. Michigan residents over the age of 80 years continue to see the highest virus deaths per million residents.

DETROIT – In cooperation with Wayne Regional Educational Service Agencies (RESA), Wayne County officials said they have developed a metric system with three key data points to put COVID-19 numbers in context. We’re looking at numbers of cases, the trend rate in communities and positivity rate,” said Wayne County Director of Communications Bill Nowling. Michigan health officials have repeatedly said the positivity rate of COVID-19 tests in the state needs to remain below 3% to show that the spread of the virus is under control. As of this weekend, the state’s 7-day moving average for COVID tests positivity rate was 13.21%, far higher than where state health officials want it to be. Michigan’s COVID tests positivity rate has not been below 3% since early October. Gretchen Whitmer noted in an interview with Local 4 that the 3% benchmark will be important in deciding when to lift new COVID restrictions that go into effect this week. Whitmer said the positivity rate will have to fall below 3% during the three-week period of stricter measures to stop the spread before restrictions could be lifted.
