Some experts believe the 2020 count could be the worst undercount in nearly 70 years.

New census data shows the exodus from Detroit continuing, with the city losing 6% of its population and bringing the number of people living in Wayne County down as well.

DETROIT – Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Rep. Rashida Tlaib announced Wednesday they’re preparing to challenge the result of the 2020 Census. City and state officials argued that more time was needed to count due to the hurdles posed by COVID-19. The deadline to complete the 2020 Census has been shifting back and forth due to the coronavirus pandemic and numerous court rulings. Each Michigan resident counted in the census accounts for $3,000 in federal funding provided to the state. However, federal funding for states are based on the entire state’s census response rate, not just the response from individual communities. States are essentially competing against one another for federal funding associated with the census. The 2020 Census is a 9-question survey designed to count the population across the country and five U.S. territories.

DETROIT – There are reports that this year’s census count could get cut short. If it is cut short, that would be a major hit to the city of Detroit. DETROIT U.S. Census Bureau staff are coming to Detroit communities to encourage residents to complete the 2020 Census. Detroit, with 380,572 households, has a census response rate of 47.9 percent as of Wednesday -- one of the lowest census response rates in the state and among larger cities across the country, according to Census Bureau data. Wayne County has an overall census response rate of 63.3 percent, which is low compared to response rates in Macomb County, 78.9 percent, and Oakland County, 74.6 percent. Wayne Countys response rate is ranked #63 in Michigan, while Detroits response rate is ranked #491 out of all Michigan cities and townships. The Census Bureau has requested to extend the census self-response deadline to October 31 due to the pandemic.

The Michigan Black Caucus Foundation is trying their best to change that -- one door at a time. Were going to be knocking around 28,000 doors between now and August, said Michigan Black Caucus Foundation Executive Director Minou Jones. The organization is currently visiting Detroit neighborhoods with the fewest responses to the census. Michigan is tied with Iowa for third place for the highest census response rates in the country, according to the census website. The national response rate is 61.5% and Michigan has a 67.8% response rate as of June 18. Minnesota is in first place nationally with a 71% response rate and Wisconsin isnt far behind with a 68.5% response rate. Keweenaw, Lake, Mackinac and Oscoda counties have response rates of about 30% or below -- the lowest response rates in the state. Detroits census response rate has a history of being low.

Oakland County is recruiting hundreds of workers to help with the 2020 Census. Oakland County Michigan Works! is hosting events at service centers in Novi, Oak Park, Pontiac, Southfield, Troy and Waterford. They’re hoping to hire 1,800 temporary workers for jobs that run through September. The event is from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24.
