The so-called Citgo 6 are employees of Houston-based Citgo refining company, which is owned by Venezuelaโs state oil company, PDVSA. Judge Lorena Cornielles, who oversaw the trial, did not respond to a letter from The Associated Press seeking permission to observe. Pereira's family said in the letter that he suffers from at least seven chronic health problems including diabetes and back trouble that requires surgery.

In exchange, officials paid Gonzlez $20 million between 2014 and 2018 to provide goods and services to Citgo's parent company, PDVSA, at inflated prices. "Citgo lost millions of dollars as a result," the lawsuit alleges. The lawsuit follows a similar complaint filed by Citgo two weeks ago against former Miami congressman David Rivera for allegedly breaking a $50 million consulting contract with PDVSA. To date, 28 individuals have been charged as part of the ongoing probe by prosecutors in Houston, Miami and Washington.

As a blue car was pulling out of the parking lot of the Citgo at Michigan Avenue and Middlebelt Road, someone opened fire on a white SUV parked at a pump, causing other customers to duck for cover. Police caught up with the blue car in a nearby neighborhood. Police said one person was taken into custody, and several guns were recovered. Police are still searching for the other people involved.
