Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced Wednesday that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits program will expand to low-income college students starting Thursday, April 1. This is the second action taken by MDHHS during the pandemic to help college students buy food. Working with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, MDHHS last year expanded food assistance eligibility to many college students enrolled in career and technical education programs.

The group connected with the Ann Arbor Senior Center and began advertising in the center’s newsletter for virtual pen pals. “Chatting with my virtual pen pal has helped me remain connected to the U-M campus and the surrounding Ann Arbor community, as well as learn more about Michigan in general,” Souza said in a statement. “Additionally, as an aspiring high school teacher, I was so excited to learn that my pen pal was a high school teacher!

Students will now be on break from the end of the day on Friday, Nov. 20, through Monday, Nov. 30. In an email, the university also informed students of the suspension of in-person classes due to Sunday’s statewide mandates on colleges and universities.

On Sept. 8, university officials said that contact tracing is being conducted for all COVID-19 cases. However, the Central Michigan District Health Department reports it’s identified 260 cases related to CMU’s student population. A group of students participating in a #NotFiredUpForFall campaign put up signs in popular spots on campus Monday calling on the university to suspend in-person classes. CMU President Bob Davies addressed these requests in a letter on Aug. 28.

The state of Michigan said federal money will help pay for the program. Roughly 16,000 low-income college students who are enrolled in career and technical education programs could be eligible for SNAP, which stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. “These SNAP benefits will help them focus on their educational needs and prepare for a successful future.”Previous eligibility requirements had made it harder for technical students to qualify for food assistance. “Expanding access to SNAP is a huge benefit to students who are juggling their courses along with work, family and other obligations,” said Mike Hansen, president of the Michigan Community College Association.
