A leading group of medical experts says the term “excited delirium” should not be listed as a cause of death.

The issue of whether George Floyd was suffering from the disputed condition of “excited delirium” the day he was killed has resurfaced at the federal trial of three former Minneapolis police officers charged with depriving him of his civil rights.

He said intensive care unit delirium isnt uncommon, especially in older patients and people with medical problems. Research suggests COVID-19 delirium is trending younger, though, with some patients arriving at the hospital complaining of hallucinations, experts said. Early studies suggest some COVID-19 delirium might also be linked to prolonged periods of low oxygen. Doctors are just starting to learn about the long-term consequences of COVID-19, and its important to study people as they recover, George said.
