San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera announced last week he was taking the dramatic step of suing the city’s own school district, which has kept its classrooms closed nearly a year. In the motion filed Thursday in San Francisco Superior Court, Herrera included alarming testimony from hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area, doctors and parents on the emotional and mental harms of extended distance learning. Teachers unions in many large school districts, including San Francisco, say they won’t go back to classrooms until they are vaccinated. “Not a single San Francisco public school student has set foot in their classroom in 327 days,” Herrera said at a news conference, calling it shameful and unlawful. While the vast majority of California’s public schools have been closed since March, San Francisco schools have been allowed to reopen since September. Since the start of the pandemic, San Francisco has been on the cutting edge of COVID-19 restrictions. Newsom sidestepped direct comment on the San Francisco lawsuit, saying everyone is on the same page and wants to reopen schools safely.

Of the 28 alleged drug dealers named, 27 live outside of San Francisco and come to the Tenderloin from Oakland, Hayward, San Jose, Suisun City and elsewhere, officials said. He said the “commuter drug dealers” acted like “independent contractors,” selling drugs in exchange for housing.

The oil companies strategy is to keep the light from shining on their own behavior. Oil companies got the cases transferred to San Francisco federal court, where two judges reached different conclusions. The companies had argued that federal law controls fossil fuel production, and Congress has encouraged oil and gas development.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA The National Rifle Association has withdrawn its lawsuit against San Francisco over the city's resolution labeling the gun-rights group a "terrorist organization." "San Francisco will never be intimidated by the NRA." It also says San Francisco "should take every reasonable step" to assess ties between its contractors and the NRA. San Francisco officials scoffed at the assertion and said the resolution was never meant to change city law. At the time, Brewer called Breed's memo a positive development but said the NRA will not withdraw its lawsuit until the resolution is formally revoked.

(CNN) - San Francisco will become the first US city to effectively ban e-cigarette sales, after the city's board of supervisors voted in favor of an ordinance Tuesday. This includes sales in brick-and-mortar stores, as well as online sales shipped to a San Francisco address. This puts San Francisco -- where leading e-cig maker Juul Labs is headquartered -- at the center of a tense debate. Juul is also behind a ballot initiative that experts worry could roll back the city ordinance if voters approve it in upcoming elections. "If the federal government is not going to act to protect our kids, San Francisco will."
