DETROIT โ A man armed with a high-powered rifle was killed during a shootout with police after he murdered a woman over a child custody issue and fired shots into a police station, according to authorities. Detroit police Chief James Craig said the man involved in the shooting approached the Fifth Precinct in a large, black SUV and got out with a โhigh-poweredโ rifle. He fired about four shots into the police station, Craig said. The lieutenant at the desk put out a call for help, and as units responded, the armed man left the front area of the police station, according to authorities. When he came across one of the responding police vehicles, the man fired at it, hitting it at least once in the windshield, officials said.

The Senior Cupid Ball started as an event for Detroitโs senior women, but has become so popular that senior men were invited for Saturdayโs event. The event is to thank the seniors for supporting the Detroit Police Department and to show Detroitโs seniors how valuable they are to the community. โIt was a way to bring out, initially, senior women who live alone -- or are alone -- and to let them know they are not forgotten,โ Craig said. According to Craig, hundreds of seniors were turned away Saturday because the event reached capacity and that the Senior Cupid Ball will be ready for a much larger attendance.
