This year, the event was forced outside at the last minute, but authorities still found a way to honor 10 police officers, firefighters and EMS workers who are now public role models. Detroit police Chief James Craig was quick to point out the number of women in the department, especially those who have climbed the ladder. Between the Detroit Police Department and the Detroit Fire Department, there were 10 nominees for Officer and Fire Department Woman of the Year. While some of the other nominees said winning would be nice, their message of female empowerment was more important.

Officer Larkins retired from the department in 1982 and died on March 9, 2008. In recognition of his service, fallen officer Scott Larkins will also be honored at the upcoming Above and Beyond award ceremony. The Detroit Public Safety Foundation will host its 7th Annual Above and Beyond awards ceremony Wednesday, Nov. 6 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at MGM Grand in Detroit. The Fallen and Critically injured Officers Remembrance Committee of the Detroit Public Safety Foundation is sending the family of Scott Larkins to Washington, DC in May.
