A longtime staple of the Detroit radio airwaves is calling it a career after half a century at the mic.

Longtime WJR radio host Frank Beckmann has died nearly one year after retiring from his decadeslong career, according to several reports.

John O’Leary had a career in Detroit radio that spanned nearly 40 years.

His famous catch phrase was “Ooooh, that’s scaary!” Count Scary would rank the scary level of each movie with a scale of pants, referring to scaring your pants off.

DETROIT – Metro Detroit bid a fond farewell to one of its longtime radio friends Friday as Frank Beckmann retired after 48 years behind the microphone. Just shy of five decades, the one constant voice from the golden tower of the Fisher Building and WJR was that of Beckmann. DETROIT – Detroit sports broadcasting legend Frank Beckmann has announced his plans to retire after 48 years with WJR. Beckmann has hosted “The Frank Beckmann Show” on weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon for the last 18 years. Throughout his career, Beckmann is the only person to broadcast games for all four of Detroit’s major sports teams -- the Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and Lions. “As a youngster growing up on the east side of Detroit, I always imagined sitting behind a microphone, announcing Lions and Tigers games,” Beckmann said. Beckmann was indicted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

“Solutions Not Slogans” hosted by radio personality Angie Starr of 105.9 KISS FM answered Detroit voters' questions about this year’s election. “This election is so important and I want everybody that can vote to vote! And in true radio fashion, she’s helping to get that message out through music. The way your vote matters, why your vote is important and why you need to know everyone that is on the ballot.
