It wasn’t the debate on Mackinac Island anyone would’ve imagined a few weeks ago. But with former Detroit Police Chief James Craig and Perry Johnson disqualified from the ballot, the remaining candidates got a chance to show what they were about.

Thursday (May 26), five republican candidates were officially thrown off the ballot by the state board of canvassers. Those candidates include former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, Perry Johnson, Donna Brandenburg, Michael Markey, and Mike Brown.

The Michigan Bureau of Elections says five GOP candidates for governor are ineligible for the August ballot, including former Detroit Police Chief James Craig and Quality Guru Perry Johnson.

DETROIT – A man armed with a high-powered rifle was killed during a shootout with police after he murdered a woman over a child custody issue and fired shots into a police station, according to authorities. Detroit police Chief James Craig said the man involved in the shooting approached the Fifth Precinct in a large, black SUV and got out with a “high-powered” rifle. He fired about four shots into the police station, Craig said. The lieutenant at the desk put out a call for help, and as units responded, the armed man left the front area of the police station, according to authorities. When he came across one of the responding police vehicles, the man fired at it, hitting it at least once in the windshield, officials said.

DETROIT – A man who died after being shot by police tried to get psychological help before the incident, his family said. Craig said Michael Moza was a suspect in multiple shootings at that residence and was followed by police during the first incident. “for the election.”Police said Michael Moza started to have an outburst and get sick on the job. The next morning Michael Moza was accused of firing five more shots into the home from the prior incident. Michael is the third person with mental health issues to be shot and killed by police in recent months.

DETROIT – The Detroit Police Department has been trying to clean up what chief James Craig admits was a dirty narcotics unit -- the department launched what’s called operation “clean sweep.”The operation led to the firing of one officer, the retirement of a sergeant and three other officers, suspensions of two officers with pay and the resignations of three officers. “This probe has had a significant impact on rooting out corruption, but our work does continue,” Craig said. And those monies were not paid, not paid to the informant. Suggesting alleged embezzlement by officers,” Craig said. Craig said this is the first time a police corruption probe of this magnitude and complexity was launched by the department.

DETROIT Video has gone viral of a Detroit police officer shooting a dog that police said had attacked a police K-9. Detroit police chief James Craig has provided more context on that shooting on Monday. The video shows the dog behind the fence spot the officer and the K-9 and run toward the fence. The police dogs muzzle was in the mouth of the other dog and the dog wouldnt let go. I can say that the K-9 officer made an attempt to dislodge the dog, Craig said.

DETROIT – Police Chief James Craig hosted the 4th annual Senior Cupid Ball Saturday at the Roostertail on Detroit’s east side. The Senior Cupid Ball started as an event for Detroit’s senior women, but has become so popular that senior men were invited for Saturday’s event. The event is to thank the seniors for supporting the Detroit Police Department and to show Detroit’s seniors how valuable they are to the community. “It was a way to bring out, initially, senior women who live alone -- or are alone -- and to let them know they are not forgotten,” Craig said.
