Read full article: On this day: October 212003: Singer-songwriter and guitarist Elliott Smith, best known for his Academy Award-nominated song "Miss Misery," dies at age 34 in Los Angeles from two stab wounds to the chest. At the time of his death, Smith was living with his girlfriend, Jennifer Chiba, who told authorities she was taking a shower when she heard him scream and then found him with a knife in his chest. She pulled out the knife and called 911, but Smith died later in the hospital. The autopsy evidence was inconclusive as to whether Smith's wounds were self-inflicted. Hide Caption
