Federal protections against eviction are set to expire on Saturday and Michigan courts are preparing for an expected wave of landlord requests to kick out tenants who are behind in their rent.

U-M researchers found that overall cases resulting in eviction orders decreased during the pandemic, boosted by Michigan’s Eviction Diversion Program.

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State House Development Authority (MSHDA) announced a $282 million rental assistance program meant to help tenants who are struggling due to the COVID pandemic avoid eviction. The program is also meant to ensure that landlords can recoup owed rent. The COVID Emergency Rental Assistance (CERA) program replaces the Eviction Diversion Program (EDP) that MSHDA launched in July. Landlords or tenants can apply for CERA. Tenants and landlords can also apply through their local service agency.

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that her administration is taking action to support Michigan families, restaurants and small businesses among the COVID-19 pandemic. The Whitmer Administration plans to implement another liquor buyback program for restaurants and bars and partner with Michigan restaurants to allow SNAP benefits for prepared meals. It also announced another $2 million for the Eviction Diversion Program. DETROIT – Michigan’s eviction moratorium officially expired, leaving hundreds or potentially thousands of of families at risk of being put out of their homes if they can’t afford to pay rent. In an effort to ease some of the strain, the city of Detroit was able to extend that moratorium for its residents. “If you’re working, you’ve got one set of options, but if you’re unemployed, the options change,” said Rodney Watts. Gretchen Whitmer’s statewide moratorium on evictions expired, the 36th District Court announced it would be extending that moratorium in the city of Detroit until Aug. 15. Duggan urged residents in need to visit the official Detroit Eviction Prevention Resources website.

The Eviction Diversion Program (EDP) is being administered by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) in collaboration with Michigan Supreme Court and Department of Health and Human Services. When the Michigan-wide moratorium on evictions is lifted on July 16, 2020, the Eviction Diversion Programs (EDP) will begin. Q2: How is the Eviction Diversion Program being funded? The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan has risen to 62,695 as of Friday, including 5,888 deaths, state officials report. Friday’s update represents an increase of 389 confirmed cases and two additional deaths. Thursday’s total was 62,306 confirmed cases and 5,886 deaths. The cumulative data under the new reporting system includes cases from January 1, 2020 through June 23, 2020. Gretchen Whitmer confirmed to Local 4 that the rest of the state won’t be moving to phase five of her coronavirus (COVID-19) reopening plan this week.

Michigan’s ban on evictions amid the coronavirus pandemic has been extended until July 15. Gretchen Whitmer’s order to temporarily ban evictions was set to expire June 30, but on Friday her office announced she signed Executive Order 2020-134 to extend the temporary suspension of evictions until July 15. Tenants whose back rent is not completely covered by the Eviction Diversion Program will be entered into manageable payment plans facilitated by Supreme Court Administrative Order 2020-17, according to Whitmer’s office. The program was created following the passage of Senate Bill 690, which passed unanimously out of both the Michigan House and Senate on June 17. The legislation appropriated $60 million in Coronavirus Relief Funding to the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity for the creation of a rental assistance program to assist tenants and landlords after the eviction moratorium concludes.
