Even if a judge has ordered an eviction, residents may be able to appeal the case or receive help through the new program.

Millions of people who are behind on their rent payments may be forced to leave their homes after the Supreme Court struck down the Biden administration’s ban on evictions.

When the new eviction moratorium went into effect, it was relief for tens of thousands of Michiganders. But while it staved off homelessness, it’s only temporary.

In April, Michigan introduced the COVID Emergency Rental Assistance program, which helps tenants and landlords with financial aid. Michigan still has about $500 million in unspent rental assistance grants.

The nationwide moratorium on evictions is expected to expire Saturday, putting millions of Americans at risk, unless Congress extends it.

U-M researchers found that overall cases resulting in eviction orders decreased during the pandemic, boosted by Michigan’s Eviction Diversion Program.

The CDBG program is overseen by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The funds are focused toward places with households facing higher risk of eviction including:Communities with high rates of individuals in industries with high job loss in states with high unemployment;Communities with high rates of businesses in industries with high job loss in states with high unemployment; andConcentrations of those most at risk for transmission and risk of eviction, with higher amounts for states with high rates of coronavirus. Housing activists are fearful that it will not be up and running in time, putting renters at risk of eviction. They’re hoping that Whitmer can revisit the deadline before countless families are out on the streets.

Michigan’s ban on evictions amid the coronavirus pandemic has been extended until July 15. Gretchen Whitmer’s order to temporarily ban evictions was set to expire June 30, but on Friday her office announced she signed Executive Order 2020-134 to extend the temporary suspension of evictions until July 15. Tenants whose back rent is not completely covered by the Eviction Diversion Program will be entered into manageable payment plans facilitated by Supreme Court Administrative Order 2020-17, according to Whitmer’s office. The program was created following the passage of Senate Bill 690, which passed unanimously out of both the Michigan House and Senate on June 17. The legislation appropriated $60 million in Coronavirus Relief Funding to the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity for the creation of a rental assistance program to assist tenants and landlords after the eviction moratorium concludes.

Gretchen Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-118 to extend the duration of protections for tenants and mobile home owners from being evicted from their home until June 30. Whitmer also signed Executive Order 2020-119 to extend protections for vulnerable populations in Michigan’s county jails, local lockups and juvenile detention centers until July 9. The order also allows local officials more flexibility in releasing vulnerable populations who do not pose a threat to public safety.

DETROIT – The 36th District Court in Detroit is extending its period of limited operations previously announced on March 13 to coincide with the extension of Michigan Gov. On Friday, Whitmer extended Michigan’s stay-at-home order until June 12 and the state of emergency until June 19. Both executive orders were previously set to expire after May 28. The court’s moratorium on evictions will also be extended through June 12 due to the coronavirus outbreak in Michigan. DETROIT – The 36th District Court previously issued a moratorium on evictions March 13. According to a news release, the court has now extended the moratorium to coincide with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Executive Order 2020-85. The temporary suspension regarding evictions will continue through June 11, 2020.
