The CDC tested two different mask modifications -- putting a three-layered cloth mask over a surgical mask and โ€œknotting and tucking,โ€ where someone knots the ear loops of a surgical mask and tuck in the excess material to reduce the gaps on the side of the face. AdCDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky discussed the new research designed to evaluate different strategies to improve masksโ€™ ability to block particles. Putting a cloth mask over the surgical mask and knotting and tucking the mask both boosted protection. โ€œBased on this new information, the CDC is updating the mask information for the public on the CDC website to provide new options on how to improve mask fit,โ€ Walensky said. The new options include wearing a mask with a moldable nose wire or wearing a cloth mask over a surgical mask.

In the outbreak on the USS Theodore Roosevelt -- a close quarters, high-risk environment -- wearing a mask reduced the risk of becoming infected by 70%. The benefits of wearing masks really highlight the risks of getting together with others to eat and drink when you canโ€™t wear a mask. Likewise small gatherings can pose a big risk because people are less likely to wear a mask around people they know well. The c-d-c has been late to support universal mask wearing. The delay the CDC had in supporting universal mask wearing helped the virus spread, but we can change that now.

If hot water is not available, wash the mask in soap or detergent and room-temperature water, followed by either boiling the mask for 1 minute OR; by soaking the mask in 0.1% chlorine for 1 minute and thoroughly rinsing the mask with room-temperature water (there should not be any toxic residue of chlorine on the mask). Gretchen Whitmer late Wednesday clarified her order requiring masks in organized sports, saying they must be worn in training and competition only when athletes cannot consistently keep 6 feet apart. The measure explicitly mentions football, soccer and volleyball as sports where face coverings are a must due to the coronavirus pandemic. But it also now exempts sports in which athletes can keep distance except for occasional and fleeting moments such as tennis, golf, cross country, baseball and softball. Earlier this week, state House Speaker Lee Chatfield, a Republican, criticized requiring children participating in outdoor sports to wear face coverings. Whitmer, in a statement, said the virus is easily spread through airborne particles and can affect everyone differently.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham is on board with the requirement, urging people to wear face masks and businesses to require them. Whitmer, the department just doesnโ€™t have the resources to respond to every complaint about people not complying with the mask requirement. Hackel believes the new mask requirement is a knee-jerk reaction to recent events, and that it is not democratic. As of Monday, Michigan is reporting 69,722 COVID-19 cases and 6,075 deaths -- and increase of 384 new cases and seven deaths since Sunday.

LANSING, Mich. Michigan officials are warning of fake face mask exempt cards that have been circulated by some groups in an effort to bypass wearing face coverings in businesses and locations where they are required amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. These groups are trying to spread misinformation about the use of face coverings, and the unfortunate outcome is that they are also endangering the lives of many people, Nessel said. COVID-19 cases have been increasing at a more rapid rate than previous weeks in Michigan and across the country. The chart shows a high risk of COVID-19 transmission when no face coverings are worn, and the least risk of transmission when coverings are worn by both parties.
