According to officials, most classes will be taught in person, residence halls will open at roughly 80% capacity and fans will be able to attend athletic events in the stands. University President Mark Schlissel made the announcement at the beginning of a live COVID-19 briefing on Zoom with other university leaders. Most student-facing services, such as libraries, museums, study spaces, Recreational Sports facilities, counseling, wellness and other support services will have expanded in-person opportunities, while continuing to maintain remote options. Harmon said that new students can expect expanded fall welcome activities and the opportunity to engage with others on campus.

The expanded testing plan includes weekly asymptomatic testing for the remaining students, faculty and staff on campus. For those quarantining off campus, testing will be expanded, and departure testing will still be required for undergraduates returning home, as was the case for the Thanksgiving holiday. While mandatory for undergraduates, departure testing is recommended for all other students. In addition to a reduction of in-person classes, density in U-M residence halls will be reduced by more than half.

Students attending the University of Michigan in the fall must spend two weeks monitoring their health before attending classes and reduce contact with others, the university announced Monday. In a letter to its students on Aug. 3, the Ann Arbor university told students to observe a 14-day period of enhanced social distance at home before arriving in Ann Arbor or on campus.During the two-week period, students are asked to:Take their temperature twice a day and monitor for fever. Students from international locations will start their period of enhance social distancing when they arrive. They should attend in-person classes until their 14-day period is over, even if it overlaps with scheduled classes. Currently, the university is building its plan for evaluating students with suspected COVID-19 symptoms, the U-M said.
