At a night race in Semmering last Tuesday, Michelle Gisin became the first skier other than Vlhova or Shiffrin to win a World Cup slalom in 29 races since January 2017, when Frida Hansdotter triumphed in Flachau. Vlhova and Gisin are 1-2 in both the slalom and the overall standings.

Organizers first lowered the start gate for the second run after gusts set in higher up on the mountain following the opening leg. Vlhova won the the GS on the Zauberberg in 2018 for the first of her four World Cup wins in the discipline. Shiffrin won two giant slaloms in two days on this hill in 2016 before adding a slalom victory the next day.

Brignoneโs Italian teammate, Marta Bassino, was fourth, and overall World Cup leader Petra Vlhova finished sixth. The three-time overall champion was expected back in action at technical races in Semmering, Austria on Dec. 28-29.

The American skier was at first subdued after crossing the line and seeing she had secured her 67th World Cup win. Shiffrin tied Marcel Hirscher for third on the all-time World Cup win list, trailing only Lindsey Vonn with 82 and Ingemar Stenmark with 86.
