The Environmental Protection Agency says the changes show that few automakers could meet what it called unrealistic emissions and mileage standards set by the Obama administration through the 2020 model year. The EPA report released Wednesday says gas mileage fell 0.2 miles per gallon for model year 2019, while greenhouse gas emissions rose by 3 grams per mile traveled, compared with 2018 figures. Mileage dropped to 24.9 miles per gallon while greenhouse gas emissions rose to 356 grams per mile, the report said. It was updated on Jan. 14, 2021, to correct the second paragraph to show that new vehicle gas mileage for 2019 decreased rather than increased.

The indictment claims Parma, a 40-year-old Italian citizen living in Bloomfield Hills, worked as a senior manager of diesel drivability and emissions at FCA from 2010 to 2016. Parma is accused of operating an elaborate scheme to install a "defeat device" in the engines to reduce emissions during testing. Volkswagen had to pay $2 billion in fines for turning off the emissions controls except for when it was tested. FCA's emissions controls worked, but not as well as when the testing was done.

Crews are taking the two old engine plants that have been at the site for 100 years and turning them into an assembly plant. The I-beam put in place Tuesday was the first of 299 vertical plant shop beams. "It just shows FCA is going to be here forever," FCA paint facilities Chief John Powell said. "It shows Detroit is the automotive capital of the world and we're still building assembly plants," Powell said.
