Founders Brewing Co. announced Thursday that its Detroit taproom will reopen in 2020 after it closed in the midst of a racial discrimination lawsuit against the brewery. A specific date for reopening has not been named. However, when the taproom does reopen in the new year, Founders leaders said the profits from the next three years will be donated to charities and community organizations.

DETROIT Founders Brewing Co. announced changes and future plans Thursday after heavy backlash and fallout over a racial discrimination lawsuit. The Grand Rapids-based brewery said it will reopen its Detroit taproom next year, but it didnt specify a date. The taproom closed after a former employee filed the lawsuit against Founders. Founders said all proceeds from the taproom through at least 2022 will be donated to Detroit charities. What were really striving to do here is to work with the community, said Mike Stevens, Founders co-owner and CEO.

When Evans' attorney, Jack Schulz, interviewed Founders General Manager Dominic Ryan, Ryan beat around questions about race and whether he knew Evans was black. This motion will include documentary proof that neither Mr. Evans race nor retaliation played any part in Founders decision to end Mr. Evans employment. Third, through this testimony, Mr. Ryan was simply saying that he does not assume anything about individuals race or ethnicity unless they tell him that information. While it might be acceptable to speculate about this type of thing in casual conversation, Mr. Ryan was not having a casual conversation.
