DETROIT – For 50 years, Chef Phil Jones has cooked in high-end restaurants and fed those in need. In March 2020, on Friday the 13th, COVID took away Jones’ catering business and cooking classes. “They have thousands of pounds of produce to try and get out to the community,” Jones recalled. “All these wonderful people coming out to TCF to load trucks and cars and vans and trailers,” Jones recalled. His desire to give back during a pandemic led to the Detroit Free Press to name him 2021 Chef of the Year.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – There’s no doubt that the COVID pandemic has been an emotional time for so many people. There’s been too much heartbreak, but there’s also been moment that can make your heart burst with happiness and gratitude. Coronavirus survivor Heather Elizabeth-Brown spent 120 days in the hospital with 31 of those days on a ventilator in a medically induced coma at Beaumont Royal Oak. In her COVID-19 fog, she panicked, but she remembers a neurotrauma ICU named Zac Mudge. Brown said she never had the chance to properly thank him before the Zoom call.

She took a children’s book she authored and turned it into a full movement doing good across Metro Detroit, and it all involves an egg. This week for Your Neighborhood meet the grown woman who’s egging people and businesses across Metro Detroit. “What we do is we ‘egg’ a Metro Detroit area organization that helps kids and we can also help families that are in need,” she explained. The “egging” idea came from a series of three children’s books called The Good Eggs that Sandra wrote herself. For more than five decades this non profit has been in the fight against racism, and you can join in with a simple signature. It’s a declaration of war against racism created by the local non profit New Detroit. “New Detroit is a coalition of leaders working to achieve racial understanding and racial equity among southeast Michigan,” said Rafferty, the CEO of New Detroit. I’ve experienced going into stores and being obviously and negatively profiled,” he said. New Detroit exists not just to fight racism, but systemic racism and getting to the root of the issue, not just the symptoms.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A family in Macomb County with a boy with special needs received a big surprise Friday. The bike was custom made for Leland Kraft -- a 12-year-old boy who was born with cerebral palsy -- so he could ride with his sisters. Leland was left without a bike until Variety Children’s Charity of Detroit heard his story and decided to get involved. One child in particular really stood out: A boy who decided he wanted to give back to the community for his 9th birthday. Erica Gamboa said her son, Mason, wanted to use his birthday this year to help out locally. That’s when the idea of a canned food drive came in. “We were able to collect $485, and also a lot of canned goods,” Gamboa said. The canned goods Mason collected on his birthday.

RIVERVIEW, Mich. – While nursing home residents can’t have guests during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, some surprise visitors dropped by to brighten their day Thursday. Three alpacas paid a visit to the Rivergate Terrace Nursing Home in Riverview. Fin, Thunder and Lego spent time outside the windows of residents. They are currently stuck in their rooms because of COVID-19. The animals will return to the nursing home when the pandemic ends so the seniors can meet them up close.

GARDEN CITY, Mich. – Garden City police gifted the city’s firefighters with ballistic vest and helmets this week. According to police, the vests and helmets would be used if there is an active shooter situation because the police and fire departments are developing a response to such situations. The police decided to pay it forward after K-9 Rudy received a donated ballistic vest. The Garden City Kiwanis hosted a special fundraiser to purchase Rudy’s body armor.
