DETROIT – For 50 years, Chef Phil Jones has cooked in high-end restaurants and fed those in need. In March 2020, on Friday the 13th, COVID took away Jones’ catering business and cooking classes. “They have thousands of pounds of produce to try and get out to the community,” Jones recalled. “All these wonderful people coming out to TCF to load trucks and cars and vans and trailers,” Jones recalled. His desire to give back during a pandemic led to the Detroit Free Press to name him 2021 Chef of the Year.

Coronavirus survivor Heather Elizabeth-Brown spent 120 days in the hospital with 31 of those days on a ventilator in a medically induced coma at Beaumont Royal Oak. In her COVID-19 fog, she panicked, but she remembers a neurotrauma ICU named Zac Mudge. Brown said she never had the chance to properly thank him before the Zoom call.

The bike was custom made for Leland Kraft -- a 12-year-old boy who was born with cerebral palsy -- so he could ride with his sisters. Three alpacas paid a visit to the Rivergate Terrace Nursing Home in Riverview. Fin, Thunder and Lego spent time outside the windows of residents. They are currently stuck in their rooms because of COVID-19. The animals will return to the nursing home when the pandemic ends so the seniors can meet them up close.

According to police, the vests and helmets would be used if there is an active shooter situation because the police and fire departments are developing a response to such situations. The police decided to pay it forward after K-9 Rudy received a donated ballistic vest. The Garden City Kiwanis hosted a special fundraiser to purchase Rudy’s body armor.
