When thinking about Detroit music, the first thing that comes to mind is Motown. People don’t realize the well-deserved recognition Detroit receives for rock, jazz, and gospel.

Kevin Stewart Jr. is a motivated gospel singer who describes his music journey in three words: hard work, love and sacrifice. Today on “Live In The D”, host Tati Amare was joined by Stewart to talk about his new album, Changed.

Larry Clark, the member of the famous Clark gospel family, joined us in studio on ‘Live in The D’ with his three adorable children, Malcom, Chauncey and Chloe. They have a new album out and a children’s book titled “Summer Camp”. The family will be hosting a book signing tomorrow at Baker’s Bible and Bookstore in Detroit.

Today we have someone who is making waves in the gospel world and who pays homage to the Detroit gospel greats. His debut album, “Church’n With Friends,” features local gospel legends like Karen Clark Sheard, Kierra Sheard, Marvin Sapp, and many more.

This musician recently wrapped up a project right here in Detroit.

Last month gospel singer Kuipiio Livingston was waiting for a double lung transplant. Even with breathing tubes and a life-sustaining apparatus she never lost her ability to sing.

Detroit has a long, strong, proud history of gospel music, and some of our favorites are once again taking the national stage and being recognized. The 36th Stellar Gospel Music Awards air this Sunday, August 1st, and Detroit will definitely be well represented.

NEW YORK – Gospel star Rance Allen, whose Rance Allen Group drew upon contemporary sounds for such 1970s hits as “Ain’t No Need of Crying” and “I Belong To You” and anticipated such crossover gospel artists as the Winans and Amy Grant, has died at age 71. Allen was a longtime Toledo, Ohio resident and most recently bishop for Church of God in Christ for the Michigan Northwestern Harvest Jurisdiction. “I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Gospel Great, Bishop Rance Allen,” singer Gloria Gaynor tweeted. On “Just My Salvation,” the Allen Group reworked the Temptations melancholy love song “Just My Imagination” into an uptempo hymn. On his own, Rance Allen was nominated for a Grammy in 2009 for best gospel performance for “I Understand,” which featured Mariah Carey and BeBe Winans among others.

The Clark sisters have a new movie called “The First Ladies of Gospel” that describes their humble beginnings to winning multiple Grammys. Host Jason Carr got the chance to chat with Shelea Frazier, who plays Dorenda Clark Cole in the movie “The First Ladies of Gospel”. She also explained the pain, work ,and dedication that it took for the Clark Sisters to become a Grammy-Award winning group. “The First Ladies of Gospel” will premiere Saturday April 11, on Lifetime.
