DETROIT – A freighter ran aground in the Detroit River’s Livingstone Channel at about 7 a.m. Wednesday. Boat traffic is being redirected as crews are working to free the Harvest Spirit, a Canadian vessel built in 2012. The ship was headed toward Thunder Bay in Ontario, just north of Isle Royale in Lake Superior, when it went aground between Grosse Ile and Bois Blanc Island.

GROSSE ILE, Mich. – Grosse Ile police pulled a driver and vehicle from the Detroit River following a crash. The incident happened Friday night on East River Road near the Grosse Ile Yacht Club. He pointed officers to the river where they found the driver and vehicle. Police said the driver was going too fast to make a turn. That’s a steep curve so I know it can mislead people sometimes, but never anything like this where people have driven into the water.

GROSSE ILE, Mich. – The Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge over the Trenton Channel will remain closed at least until the fall of 2021, officials said Friday. Last week, a routine underwater inspection of the piers supporting the bridge revealed “severe erosion” that “must be repaired before the bridge can be reopened," according to a Wayne County official. A timeline for the repairs is currently being developed, but officials said Friday that the bridge is expected to remain closed until fall 2021, “if not longer.”The bridge originally closed for repairs in May, and was expected to reopen in December of this year. The bridge, also known as “free bridge," closed last year in November for emergency repairs to address structural integrity issues, which caused massive backups and delays for frustrated residents. The May 2020 closure was meant to provide more permanent repairs, which the township says are needed to increase the life expectancy of the 90-year-old bridge and to also lift its current weight restrictions.

GROSSE ILE, Mich. – A boat fire at Ford Yacht Club in Grosse Ile is still under investigation. Crews responded to the fire on Wednesday at 6:37 a.m. and found two vessels engulfed in flames in the area designated as F-Dock. GROSSE ILE, Mich. Emergency personnel are searching the Detroit River, just south of Stony Island, after a boat capsized Sunday night. According to authorities, the incident happened at about 7:30 p.m. Police said a boater from Ontario witnessed the incident and was able to province assistance to most of the passengers, but two adults have gone missing. Police said at least nine people were onboard, consisting of adults and children. The search included Grosse Ile Police and Fire crews, the Wayne County Marine Division, Canadian Coast Guard, U.S. Coast Guard and the Downriver Dive Team. The status of the victims and their names have not been released by authorities.

The incident occurred Sunday near Grosse Ile, a suburban island between Michigan and Ontario, Canada. It's very unusual for a 39-foot boat to capsize, Grosse Ile police Lt. Kenneth Pelland said. GROSSE ILE, Mich. – Police have provided new details following the death of a man after a plane crashed on Grosse Ile Saturday. Officials say at around 4:47 p.m. an airplane crashed in a residential neighborhood in the 27000 block of Loma Circle. Police say the pilot, 57-year-old Jeffrey Dean Oliver of Lincoln Park, was ejected from the plane. Officials are investigating whether his death was caused by injuries sustained during the crash or a medical condition that may have occurred during the flight. Officials described the plane as a “Golden Circle Air T-Bird Tandem TBT-06 with fixed wings that falls within the experimental airworthiness class.”The FAA and NTSB are investigating.

He was flying an experimental ultralight plane and witnesses said the plane clipped a tree and crashed in the woods behind a neighborhood. He was the only person on board. The FAA and NTSB is investigating.

WYANDOTTE, Mich. – Wyandotte police clocked a man driving 104 mph in a 30 mph zone April 13. An officer stopped the man on on Biddle Avenue, near Plum Street, around 8 p.m.Police said the officer smelled alcohol coming from the 71-year-old Grosse Ile man’s vehicle. The man told the officer he had two drinks. The man failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. The man blew .12 and .13 on a breathalyzer test during booking, police said.

GROSSE ILE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge, officially called the Wayne County Bridge, over the Trenton Channel is scheduled to close on or after May 1 for repairs. Once it is closed, the bridge may not reopen until October 2020, according to Grosse Ile Township officials. At the time, the county said the Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge will have to undergo extensive rehabilitation work during the 2020 construction season. The design for Phase II has been completed and rehabilitation work is being bid out. The Grosse Ile Toll Bridge remains open at the north end of the island.

GROSSE ILE, Mich. – Progress is being made in Grosse Ile where construction crews are working around the clock on a bridge that was closed by Wayne County. Crews started to repair the bridge on Grosse Ile using heavy duty equipment. Beverly Watts, director of the Wayne County Department of Public Services said she had no choice. The closure forced people living on Grosse Ile to use the toll bridge as the only way to enter and exit the area. I work 10 hours a day and then I drive three hours home.The heavy traffic stretched for miles Friday night. A recent inspection on the main Grosse Ile bridge showed it needs major repairs. Wayne County was proactive. Watts said officials expect an updated inspection of the bridge that will let them know how to move forward with construction.
