A symbol of hate was discovered on the campus of Grosse Pointe South High School on Tuesday night. The Grosse Pointe Public School System (GPPSS) issued a statement Wednesday saying a construction company working on the school grounds conducted a safety walkthrough at the school on Tuesday night and found a noose in one of the rooms. Officials say the school campus is currently a construction site and no students or staff have been allowed on site for the past three weeks. Officials say Turner Construction met with its contractors again Wednesday morning to reiterate the importance of a safe and accepting workplace. GPPSS officials say the district is participating in a full investigation of the incident.

In the video, the girls use a barrage of racial slurs and vulgar language, including the n-word, and call each other slaves. The superintendent of Grosse Pointe Public Schools, Gary Niehaus, said the video was recorded at a home, not on school grounds, so the consequences the girls face will be different. Steve Spreitzer, president President and CEO of the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion, said the community needs to get involved when instances like the video happen. "It calls for the faith community, together with the mayor, business community and different organizations collectively looking at this," Spreitzer said.
