We are in the middle of Hispanic Heritage Month and today artist Mario Mendez called joined Live In The D to talk about the DIA’s new exhibit, “Ofrendas: Celebrating el Día de Muertos 2020”. An ofrenda is an alter covered in items relating to a person who has passed away, and serve as a way to honor them. Over time, they’ve developed influences from Aztec, Mayan, and Spanish cultures, and now even modern items are added to ofrendas. The exhibit is open until Nov 8., and visitors can visit in person, or through a 360 virtual exhibit at the DIA’s website. Mendez created an ofrenda for the exhibit dedicated to workers, especially in developing countries, who have died.

Real talk: Monday is National Taco Day, and we’ve been brainstorming ways to mark the occasion.

Gretchen Whitmer has issued a proclamation declaring Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month. The business is family owned, and sister of the owner Cecilia Benedict spoke with Live in the D live from Mexicantown. Benedict said that food is an important part of Mexican and other Hispanic cultures because it brings communities together in everything from celebration to mourning. Customers don’t have to go far for their drinks either since Mexicantown Bakery also serves a variety of Hispanic coffee and espresso beverages. Tati personally recommended the tres leches cake and cuban coffee as her go-to orders from the bakery.

Southwest Detroit – From the brightly colored murals to their sizzling fajitas, La Palapa del Parian gives you a taste of Mexico. This new restaurant, located in Southwest Detroit, gets part of its name from the small city in Mexico where the owners are from, El Parian. “It’s a little town in Guadalajara, Jalisco,” said Nancy Diaz-Lopez, the owner. They have live mariachi.”The “La Palapa” part of their name is a nod to how the restaurant got started. If you would like to try La Palapa Del Parian, it is located at 1633 Lawndale Street in Southwest Detroit.

"I wasn't aware of who Yns Mexa was, but when I started the project and researched her life, I was amazed at her accomplishments," Lora said in a Q&A with Google. According to Google, Mexa embarked on her first plant-collection trip on this day in 1925. She collected about 150,000 plant specimens, and some estimate that about 500 of those were previously undiscovered. Scientists continue to study Mexa's samples to this day, and the plant specimens she collected are housed in museums and institutions around the world.
