For the first time ever, the Shelter Association is hosting the Hustle for Housing virtual 5K. โYou can join us in this event by walking, running, pushing a stroller, walking a dog, rollerblading, skateboarding, hiking, or you can be creative,โ read a news release. โThe goal is to have fun and help us continue to end homelessness one person at a time.โโ Like what youโre reading? The event kicks off at 10 a.m. and participants are encouraged to sign up in teams to enjoy a socially distant outdoor 5K.

The Shelter Association also confirmed this week the receipt of additional funding that will facilitate hotel stays for medically fragile clients. This helped the shelter prioritize housing placements for its clients at the Red Roof Inn, according to Dill. Starting Monday, 25 clients staying at Red Roof Inn will be moved to other shelter accommodations. In a Facebook post on Friday, the group criticized the move to switch to warming center programming, citing the countyโs approval to redevelop the Red Roof Inn site.

Read full article: Musicians develop cover album to benefit Detroit homeless shelterDETROIT โ A group of musicians, including Detroit-based band Sponge, are coming together to help raise money for the Pope Francis Shelter in Detroit. Sponge, which has been performing since the 1990s, usually plays for a benefit concert at St. Andrews Hall every year. In lieu of the usual performance, the band is working with other local musicians to develop a fundraiser record album -- a vinyl record. Sponge lead singer Vin Dombroski, said six Detroit bands and artists are contributing to the album. โWe know that the pandemic has affected the music community more than any other industry, so the fact these musicians were committed to coming together and helping the Pope Francis center means the world to us,โ said Chris Harthen with Pope Francis Shelter.
