Metro Detroit is in for some snow over the next 24 hours, but how much should we expect and when will it be the strongest?

Mostly cloudy with temperatures slightly below average today. Winds pick up as an arctic front will bring the potential for brief intense snow showers this evening into tonight and blustery conditions by Thursday morning.

The I-94 and I-69 bridge near the Blue Water Bridge plaza will be closed beginning Tuesday for construction.

Saturday night will be mostly clear, which will give some communities of Southeast Michigan the chance to see the northern lights. Lows will be near 60 degrees in Detroit, upper 50s in Brighton, Ann Arbor, Flint, and Sterling Heights. Lows will fall down into the mid 50s in the Thumb.

Expect clouds in the morning and maybe an isolated sprinkle, especially north of I-69. Otherwise, it will become partly cloudy in the afternoon, with a high of around 72 degrees.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is removing lane restrictions on more than 63% of its road and bridge projects across the state to ease traffic delays for Memorial Day weekend travel.

Friday’s (March 25) weather is playing out exactly as expected, with patches of drizzle and very light rain dotting the area this afternoon. However, a potent approaching upper-level disturbance will push a more organized band of rain across southeast Michigan this evening, followed by a band of snow late at night into early Saturday morning. I don’t expect much impact on paved surfaces, as surface temps are above freezing, and the overnight air temperature will take all night just to get near freezing. However, don’t be surprised if you see a dusting Saturday morning on the grass and elevated surfaces such as decks, patio furniture, mailboxes, etc.

Sunday will be cloudy, wet and chilly all day. The soggiest time of day is in the morning with steady rain rotating north from Detroit to I-69 to the thumb.

DETROIT – It’s been a windy night -- there have even been some gusts to around 40 mph. The notable exception being you poor folks immediately north of the very cold waters of Lakes Erie and St. Clair. Highs should reach the low to mid 60s (17 to 18 degrees Celsius), and then start falling rapidly by late-afternoon. Mostly sunny, breezy and cooler on Friday, with highs in the low to mid 50s (11 to 12 degrees Celsius). Mostly sunny and still cooler on Saturday, with highs in the mid 40s (8 degrees Celsius).

Becoming mostly clear Thursday night, and it’ll be a cold one with temperatures dropping into the upper teens (-8 degrees Celsius). Weekend updateThe weekend looks splendid, with plenty of sunshine and highs Saturday in the low 40s (5 degrees Celsius), and highs Sunday in the mid 40s (5 to 7 degrees Celsius). We’ll start our Saturday and Sunday mornings with lows in the low 20s (-5 degrees Celsius). If the rain comes in early, then we’ll hold in the mid 50s (13 degrees Celsius). However, if the rain holds off until late in the day -- as the European model suggests -- then we’ll probably hit 60 degrees (15 to 16 degrees Celsius)!

DETROIT – As expected, Thursday night snow has been mostly inconsequential across the area. Light snow will develop for some of us, especially south, late at night. Highs Saturday in the low 20s (-6 degrees Celsius), and lows Saturday night back down into the single digits (-13 degrees Celsius). There could be some light snow on Monday. Accordingly, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 10:00 p.m. Tuesday until noon Wednesday north of I-69, and until 9:00 a.m. south of I-69. Temperatures tonight will initially drop into the mid 20s (-4 degrees Celsius), and then rise to around 30 degrees (-1 degrees Celsius) by dawn Wednesday. That’s why the Michigan Department of Transportation is urging residents to slow down and pay attention in work zones. Erben is a construction manager with MDOT and he knows he can’t stop drivers from using their phones when they drive, but he’s asking that they at least put them away in construction zones. We’ve all seen folks texting on the phones while driving,” Erben said. Jeremy Zeitz was struck and killed while working on Sherwood Highway over I-69 in Eaton County. “It’s a pretty tight-knit community so when one road worker gets killed, then we all know about it,” said Erben.

WALTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A construction worker was killed when a pickup truck struck him Thursday afternoon along Sherwood Highway over I-69 in Walton Township. Michigan State Police said the 40-year-old road worker, of Gladwin, Mich., was working on the road when a full-sized pickup truck hit him. Police do not consider alcohol and/or drugs to be a factor in the crash. The highway was shut down Thursday afternoon while police investigated. AUBURN, Ind. – A Michigan couple and an Indiana man have been identified as the three people killed in a seven-vehicle pileup on a northeastern Indiana highway, police said Thursday. William Charles Heil, 65, of Angola, was pronounced dead at the scene after his car was pushed into the rear of a second semitrailer, police said. The crash that also involved three other passenger vehicles occurred about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday on northbound Interstate 69, about 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) north of the Auburn exit, police said. Auburn is north of Fort Wayne and south of the state line with Michigan.

DETROIT Storms that moved in overnight have been mainly traversing the I-69 corridor. Highs today will range from low 80s (27 to 28 degrees Celsius) in the Thumb, to upper 80s (31 degrees Celsius) in Lenawee and Monroe Counties. Becoming mostly clear tonight, with lows in the mid 60s (18 degrees Celsius). Mostly sunny to partly cloudy on Thursday, with highs in the low to mid 80s (28 to 29 degrees Celsius). Partly cloudy on Friday, with highs in the low 80s (27 degrees Celsius).

West wind at 10 to 15 mph will keep wind chills in the single digits (-13 degrees Celsius). A west wind at 10 to 15 mph will make it feel colder, but nearly as cold as on Friday. Snow showers are moving into and through Metro Detroit, mainly north of I-696 in the early afternoon, while most of the snow and wintry mix will be trending into our North Zone. DETROIT Flakes have started falling across Southeast Michigan, but there might not be many left by the Thursday morning commute. Most of Wednesday nights precipitation -- primarily light snow -- will be in the North Zone. Accumulation Wednesday night should be limited to some grassy areas, mainly north of I-69. As the system continues to weaken and move east, it will drag the light snow south. Even places that see light snow Thursday morning wont see much.

Temperatures south of the front remain in the low 70s (22 degrees Celsius), but have dropped to near 60 degrees (15 to 16 degrees Celsius) to its north. Although the rain will gradually slide southward this morning, it will take a while for some of the flood waters to recede. Farther south in the heart of our metropolitan area, showers and scattered thunderstorms will increase through the day. South of the front, temperatures are in the low to mid 70s (22 to 23 degrees Celsius), and may rise a few degrees this morning. Rain Thursday morning will diminish to scattered showers in the afternoon, with highs in the upper 60s (20 degrees Celsius). Partly cloudy on Friday, but highs only reach the mid 50s (13 degrees Celsius). Highs in the mid to upper 60s (19 to 20 degrees Celsius).

Lows in the mid-to-upper 50s (13 to 15 degrees Celsius) means that itll be great sleeping weather -- open up those windows! Highs will warm into the upper 70s to near 80 degrees (26 to 27 degrees Celsius), with a southwest wind at 10 to 15 mph. Lows in the mid 60s (18 degrees Celsius). Highs through the week will be not too far from 80 degrees (27 degrees Celsius), with overnight lows in the 60 to 65 degree range (15 to 18 degrees Celsius). By next Friday and Saturday, highs may reach the low to mid 80s (29 to 30 degrees Celsius)!

Highs should reach the mid 70s (23 to 24 degrees Celsius), with a somewhat breezy west-southwest wind at 10 to 15 mph by this afternoon. Lows in the mid-to-upper 50s (13 to 15 degrees Celsius) means that itll be great sleeping weather. Highs will warm into the upper 70s to near 80 degrees (26 to 27 degrees Celsius). Highs near 80 degrees (27 degrees Celsius). Highs through the week will be not too far from 80 degrees (27 degrees Celsius), with overnight lows in the 60 to 65 degree range (15 to 18 degrees Celsius).

IMLAY CITY, Mich. - Both directions of I-69 have been shut down in Lapeer County due to a power line problem, police said. The highway is closed between Wilder Road and M-24 in Imlay City, according to authorities. Traffic will be diverted to M-24, through Imlay City and back to Wilder Road, police said. Authorities are asking drivers to avoid the area during the closure, which is expected to last for six hours. No additional details about the power line problem were released.

Theres a good chance also for showers and storms to blossom with the afternoon heat.
