Roughly 5.3 million students study outside their home countries, a number that’s more than doubled since 2001. The pandemic has only exacerbated things, including a short-lived Trump administration rule requiring international students to leave if their schools held online-only classes. The Trump administration has floated curtailing Optional Practical Training, a popular program allowing international students to work. NAFSA estimated that since 2016, the decline of new international students cost the U.S. nearly $12 billion and at least 65,000 jobs.

Students attending the University of Michigan in the fall must spend two weeks monitoring their health before attending classes and reduce contact with others, the university announced Monday. In a letter to its students on Aug. 3, the Ann Arbor university told students to observe a 14-day period of enhanced social distance at home before arriving in Ann Arbor or on campus.During the two-week period, students are asked to:Take their temperature twice a day and monitor for fever. Students from international locations will start their period of enhance social distancing when they arrive. They should attend in-person classes until their 14-day period is over, even if it overlaps with scheduled classes. Currently, the university is building its plan for evaluating students with suspected COVID-19 symptoms, the U-M said.

ICE notified colleges Monday that international students will be forced to leave the U.S. or transfer to another college if their schools operate entirely online this fall. MORE: Michigan universities trying to prevent deportation of international studentsThe guidance says international students wont be exempt even if an outbreak forces their schools online during the fall term. About 5,000 international students are enrolled at Johns Hopkins. The school has plans for hybrid semesters with a mix of in-person and online classes.
